Living with Purpose
A Conversation with Brooke Neale
Mindset and Wellbeing Coach, BrookeNeale has played 176 hockey games for the New Zealand Black Sticks, came four that the 2016 Olympic Games, and won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 for the Black Sticks.
Her story is one of great success –but is not without setbacks, injuries, heartbreak and loss.
She doesn't sugar-coat it and always shares the reality of what it takes to be successful.
These days, Brooke directs her energies down an amazing path of wellbeing and mindset coaching to pass on her knowledge, experiences, and learnings to others.
When we caught up with Brooke, we found it amazing how she has turned her own experiences - good and bad - into a program that has helped 1000’s of young women in their quest for purpose.
Her key message: There's a power in giving back. As a person who has lived a life, you have experience and knowledge to pass on. Whether it's to your kids, in an organisation you're involved in, a subject you know about; you can give back and realise the enormous power there is in helping others.
Here’s Brookes top tips for overcoming the challenges to help you live a life of purpose and fulfilment.
Follow Your Curiosities
Brooke says that so often it's drummed into us that we have to find our purpose. And if you can't find it - or you're not living it, you've failed.
If you're struggling to define your 'why', try asking yourself: What are you curious about? What's nudged you to where you are today?
Start there, and the rest will follow.
Find Your Circle of Trust
"There's a great quote, which I love, which I also live by: “lions don't lose sleep over the opinion of sheep”." Says Brooke.
Be selective about the feedback you allow to influence your choices and your journey. Try out Brooke's exercise to determine whose in your circle of trust:
Find a small post-it note
Cut it into a 2x2 centimetre square
Write down on that piece of paper the names of everyone in your life whose opinion you value the highest and whose feedback you would genuinely take on board.
"And if someone else gives you that feedback or criticism, and it's not what you need at that time and it really rocks you, that's where you need to check in with yourself. Are they on the post it note, because if they're not, then you actually need to just let that go and you shouldn't worry about their opinions."
Own Your Story
"Everyone's got a different story", says Brooke.
Look back over the last ten years and consider some of the things you've struggled with - and then overcome. There may be certain times or circumstances in your life that stand out immediately - but dig a bit deeper. It could be something a little less obvious, and that you now take for granted being on the other side of the storm.
Perhaps your skin, your diet, developing communication skills or establishing a good exercise routine?
You can bet your bottom dollar that if you've been through it, there are others struggling too. There's a group of people who would benefit from hearing your story. Find them!
"It's all about lifting each other up" We couldn't agree more, Brooke!
Never Underestimate the Power of Your Words
Try Brooke's compliment challenge - you never know whose narrative you might shift.
Choose ten people. These could be friends, family, colleagues or someone who has had an impact on your life.
Give each one a compliment (be brave!)
The compliment can't be anything to do with appearance. Think a little harder and feel a little deeper about that person.
"Maybe that person that you just gave a compliment was having a really hard day and that's actually just shifted things for them."
