Why Eco-Cloths are Wiping the Floor with Microfibre: A Tale of Two Cloths
You want the best for your family right? Especially when it comes to keeping your homes clean and safe.
But have you ever paused to consider what your cleaning cloths are really made of? We thought it might be interesting to compare the life cycles of the seemingly harmless microfibre cloth and our OG Eco Cloth.
Prepare for a few surprises along the way, and learn why sustainability can also mean stylish, highly effective, and remarkably affordable cleaning!
The Lifecycle of a Microfibre Cloth
These are typically made from a combination of polyester and polyamide. Sounds high tech, right? But there's a downside.
The creation of these cloths involves melting and extruding petrochemical-based plastics, which can absorb harmful chemicals like plasticisers, UV stabilisers, lubricants, flame-retardants, and dyes. And yes, these harmful chemicals can leach out during use.
Microfibre cloths have a lifespan of about 125 washes or 1-5 years, depending on usage (if it's lasting you 5 years, ew, wash your cloths more!).
The downside is that each wash releases microplastics into our water systems. Then when they have served their purpose, they are thrown away, destined for the landfill where they take hundreds of years to break down into smaller micro-plastic particles.
It's actually unknown how long it takes these microplastics to degrade, and they can wreak havoc on marine animals and bird life if they enter the waterways.
The scariest thing is that it's taken so long for the word to get out about this! If manufacturers had to include the cost of cleaning up plastic pollution in their product costs, suddenly these cheap, seemingly wonderful products would seem like terrible value.
Which is because they are! All things considered. This new report suggests that the world has hit a point where we can no longer manage the plastic waste we produce. And short-term plastic products, like microfibre cloths, are the main culprits!
Annual production has exceeded our ability to recycle or safely dispose of the waste, meaning that plastic pollution in the oceans is projected to triple by 2040!
The Lifecycle of our Eco Cloths
Our eco-cloths start their life as sustainably forested wood pulp and cotton. This simple but powerful blend of 70% wood pulp and 30% cotton is shaped into highly effective cleaning cloths without the use of any harmful chemicals.
It's a cleaning powerhouse with a surprisingly long lifespan, lasting up to 9 months with proper care. Washing your eco-cloths is a breeze, with easy cleaning in your dishwasher or washing machine.
But the true magic happens at the end of our eco-cloth's life. Instead of ending up in a landfill like so many other cleaning products, our cloths can be composted or buried in your garden.
They decompose quickly, leaving no harmful traces behind. Some of our customers have even found creative uses for their old eco-cloths, like using them to sprout seedlings in pots. Every stage of our eco-cloth's life has been designed with our planet in mind.
Will I need to compromise to go green?
So, let's take a step back and consider the bigger picture. We all want to keep our homes clean and safe, but not at the cost of our planet.
That's where our eco-cloths shine. They're designed to blend seamlessly into your modern home with the latest trending colours and designs, and the fact they're made of organic materials means no microplastics will be left behind.
Microfibre cloths may be cheap, but consider this - their true cost doesn't account for the environmental pollution they cause. In contrast, our eco-cloths are designed with sustainability at the core, and they're proof that going green doesn't mean compromising on performance or style.
So, for the sake of our families and our planet, isn't it time we made the Good Change?
P.S. You can say goodbye to hiding your cleaning products under the sink. Our eco-cloths fit right in on the bench of any modern home!
AWESOME!
