Discover Popular Home Interior Design Styles
Transform Your Home in 2024
Here at Good Change one of our core principles is great design. This means all our products look great and are functional - we believe great design has to encompass both of these aspects!
We're always looking to the future, especially when it comes to interior design and so we thought we'd put together an article about the trends our team has been picking up on for you to have a look at. Here's what Stine has to say about it:
"I love interior design and can spend hours browsing the Danish furniture stores when I’m home in Copenhagen. It inspires me, gives me ideas and some of it is almost like pieces of art that I just marvel at."
Trends that will shape our living environments this year
We've noticed that current design trends continue to embrace the serenity of the natural world, inspiring spaces that are both tranquil and tailored. From the cosy nooks to the grand open-plan living spaces, we've got a breakdown of popular interior design styles that are capturing the hearts of homeowners and design experts alike.
Read to the end for Stine's favourite new trend... it's unexpected from her!
Stine's top tip - Natural Materials are here to stay
"I see the Danish furniture stores here in Copenhagen pushing natural, reclaimed and recycled materials in a big way.
My personal favourite at the moment is furniture made from masur wood. You may know poplar or burl wood with their massive outside knots. Masur is a growth on the tree that makes the tree fibres run in different directions, creating a very unique pattern.
So any piece of furniture you have in masur wood, will be 100% unique. I also like how it creates just a little bit of noise, in the right way, with its pattern that is so lively and personal."
What's new in floor design for modern homes?
Choosing your flooring is not just about aesthetics, but also sustainability and resilience. Look at options like bamboo or recycled wood if you're after a stylish yet cost effective and eco-friendly foundation.
We've found that carpet shops tend to push synthetic options, but as you might know we're big fans of natural products, like wool. Woollen carpets offer unmatched comfort and recent innovations in carpet technology have managed to improve the durability of traditional wool fabrics without sacrificing comfort.
They also enhance home safety and air quality, being naturally flame-resistant and capable of neutralising pollutants. Plus, wool's ability to regulate humidity and resist stains makes maintenance a breeze, combining luxury, health benefits, and ease of care in one smart, sustainable choice for your home.
The trend is to marry the natural charm of traditional materials with the practical needs of modern living, ensuring that floors are both a statement and a smart investment for any interior.
What design features are essential for a Scandinavian interior?
If you know us you'll know this is one of Stine's favourites, and probably where the inspiration for the Good Change aesthetic has its roots. Scandinavian design, or Scandi style, is renowned for its simplicity, functionality, and emphasis on nature.
Natural light, neutral colour palettes, and minimalist furniture are key interior design elements of this enduring trend. It's marrying minimalism with comfort, rather than the sparse design many people associate with minimalism.
Scandinavian design has a real focus on warmth and bringing in natural elements to help get through the long, dark winter months.
How can I bring a touch of flair to my Walls?
Gone are the days of white plain walls being the norm, although they're still great to give the impression of space in smaller rooms.
If you're thinking about adding character, think about how your walls or cabinets could become a focal point.
Texture is more important than ever
Whether through textiles, wall paper, or fixtures, texture is a subtle yet powerful way to enhance the sensory experience of a room.
We love natural features and bringing in wood in the form of slats or panels is a fantastic way to add some texture, depth and comfort to a room.
Wall paper can take center stage!
Create a grand entrance in your hallway, a funky guest toilet, or a cozy bedroom or living area. Offering an array of patterns and textures that can take centre stage in a room, providing an instant lift and character.
In terms of patterns we've seen pinstripes and checkerboard designs remaining popular into this year and that will likely continue!
How to choose the right sofa for your interior?
A sofa is more than just seating; it's a statement piece that defines your living area. Choosing the right sofa means considering size, fabric, colour, and style to ensure it complements your interior design and colour scheme, ultimately defining your space and harmonising with your decor.
A sofa is a very personal choice, so you have to go with your gut feel here. Some prefer a designer centre piece while others a soft family gathering point.
Top tip: Avoid placing your couch against the wall, give it air around, place a console behind the couch with a lamp and family photos for example. Moving the couch out in the room creates instant designer feel.
Can a home office be stylish and functional?
Absolutely. Now that more people have hybrid work roles your home office should absolutely be a space where functionality meets personal style. Make sure to get artwork on your walls that inspires you. It could be anything from simple stylish pencil drawings to more abstract motifs, whatever suits your style and gets you in the zone!
With the right colour palette and design elements, it can be both a productive work environment and a reflection of your personal taste. There's a fair bit of research suggesting that a comfortable, but well lit space is better for productivity, so ensure you've got enough natural light in your space or simulate it with smart LEDs. Desk lamps and LED strips under bookshelves are great options for adding lighting with a flair.
We recommend trying to keep it minimal behind you so that your space looks professional for Zoom meetings!
Making a statement with colour palettes
Designers often use colour palettes to convey a mood or character within a space. Bold or eclectic colour choices can reflect a homeowner's personality (if that's your thing!) and create a unique aesthetic.
Personally we're big fans of keeping things understated and fairly natural. Accenting your home with the right shade of blue or green can simulate a natural environment and really add a bit of warmth and comfort to a space.
Stine's tip on accentuating your chosen palette
"I love classic stripes, anywhere!
The black and white stripe is trending, and sit tight…the Zebra is also back! Aside from flashbacks from late nights in the 00’s I’m loving this trend and the monochrome patterns to spice up my interiors.
I’m personally over the leopard prints (for now…) and excited about stripe variations I’m seeing out there for the home. Stripes and in particular Zebra stripes can be used all over from accessories such as cushions, blankets and seat covers, but also for larger furniture such as the couch and lounge chairs.
A fresh and welcoming addition to the neutral colour scales that dominate at the moment.
How do I choose Curtains for a Modern Home Design?
Curtains are not merely window dressing; they are pivotal design elements that can make a statement in any living space. In the world of interior design, selecting the right curtains involves more than just picking out a color or pattern —it's about creating an ambience that complements the room's natural light and enhances the overall look and feel of your home interior.
When considering curtains for your contemporary interior design, think about the texture and how it plays with natural light.
Luxe velvet can add a touch of sophistication, while sheer drapes can soften a room with a diffused glow. For a minimalist or Scandinavian design, choose curtains with clean lines and neutral tones to accentuate a sense of calm and order.
Furthermore, curtains can serve as a focal point or blend into the background, depending on your interior design style. Bold patterns can add vibrancy to a room, while solid, dark hues like navy blue can bring depth and grounding.
Whatever you choose they should be as functional as they are stylish, offering the perfect balance of privacy, light control, and comfort.
What role does natural light play in Interior Design?
Intelligent use of light is one of the easiest ways to enhance the overall look and feel of a room. It brings warmth, highlights design features, and can make even the smallest spaces feel open and airy.
It can be difficult to add natural light without a full renovation, but smart LEDs make it possible to mimic natural light cycles and can really improve the look and feel of your space.
Speaking of nature. Plants, in your furniture
Stine "I love this, it's a new trend I’m trying out at home too, actually implementing plants as part of your furniture.
Plants have been a big thing in interiors for a while, but this whole new spin on it, where it becomes this permanent part of your décor is a surprising trend.
Often it's the plant as part of a table, but I’ve also seen a growing amount of input on social media with DYI projects where the plants are integrated into benches, sideboards or centrepieces in the middle of the dining table."
What's Stine's shock new trend?
"This one, on the surface, goes against all my Scandi upbringing with minimalism and later on the “insta worthy aesthetics”.
This trend is Maximalism, or more recently labelled “messy living”.
It’s a trend I’ve seen in authentic Copenhagen-chic apartments, where no one is trying to hide the fact that people actually live in this space. If you dig a bit deeper, this new trend actually goes hand in hand with high aesthetics.
The reason behind this is that an increasing number of brands are surfacing, with a philosophy of creating aesthetically beautiful every day products, such as cleaning products, skin care and other practical products, whose packaging and design is so aesthetically pleasing that you no longer need to hide them away – they are increasingly a part of your interiors and a witness of life and everyday routines in your home."
